Procedural Skills
Learners utilize the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center Medical Skills Learning Center to gain valuable experience and strengthen skills by practicing a variety of procedures and techniques under the direction of trainers and faculty.
A two-week Boot Camp for new residency interns introduces surgical knowledge including instrument identification, suturing and wound closure, and introduction to sterile technique.
Interactive human patient simulators, simulation tools, and cadavers, healthcare professionals learn to master a range of procedures including:
- Femoral and CVL access
- Airway management
- Infant and adult tracheotomies
- Intubation
- Spinal anesthesia injections
- Suturing and wound closure
- Laparoscopic procedures
- Chest tube insertion
- Patient assessments
- Code team training
- Patient, family, and staff communication
- Ultrasound technology
Cadavers are used to help students learn how to independently explore anatomy and perform complex procedures including inguinal hernia repair, fasciotomies and muscle flaps, vascular procedures, advanced abdominal and pelvic organ resections, and anatomic exposures for trauma.
