September 18, 2024

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center is proud to announce a significant milestone in advancing patient care for the region. Board-certified general surgeon William Carney, MD, completed his 1,000th robotic surgery on Monday, September 16, 2024. This achievement underscores Dr. Carney’s dedication to improving the health and well-being of the community.
“I am immensely grateful to have reached such a milestone in my career,” said Dr. Carney. “Each procedure represents a person, a family, and a community that has placed its trust in me, and that trust inspires me to keep striving for better outcomes every day.”
Dr. Carney is among the few surgeons in Pennsylvania who have achieved this remarkable accomplishment. His commitment to advancing surgical techniques has brought state-of-the-art healthcare to the region, allowing patients to receive world-class care close to home.
“Robotic surgery allows us to perform complex procedures with greater precision, flexibility, and control than traditional methods,” explained Dr. Carney. “It’s an honor to bring this advanced technology to my patients, knowing that each surgery helps improve a life and, by extension, the health of our community.”
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center introduced robotic surgery in 2012, initially offering it for gynecological, urological, and general surgery. Dr. Carney was among the first providers to utilize this minimally invasive technology. His efforts have made these advanced services accessible to patients across the region, bringing top-tier care to our community.
“This technology gives us the tools to deliver the precision our patients deserve, helping them recover and return home faster,” said Dr. Carney.
Dr. Elizabeth Dunmore, Chief Medical Officer at Conemaugh Health System, praised Dr. Carney for his achievement and commitment to patient care. “Reaching 1,000 robotic surgeries is more than a career milestone—it’s a testament to the difference we’re making in people’s lives,” she said. “Dr. Carney’s work reflects his personal excellence and represents Conemaugh’s mission of making communities healthier.”
“Dr. Carney exemplifies the best of what we aim to provide—leading-edge technology combined with compassionate, patient-centered care,” added Dr. Dunmore.
Dr. Carney, who earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 1988, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and has long been committed to elevating the standard of care for his patients. His work in robotic surgery reflects that passion, contributing to Conemaugh Memorial’s goal of delivering the best care to every patient, every time.
Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s robotic surgery program now supports a range of specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, urology, bariatrics, cardiothoracic, and orthopedics. This ensures that patients from across the region have access to the latest innovations in surgical care.
