Conemaugh Health System Now Accepting Applications for the Mentoring in Medicine Class of 2025
December 19, 2024
Conemaugh Health System is excited to announce that applications are now open for the Mentoring in Medicine program’s Class of 2025. Now in its 21st year, the program, founded by Dr. Richard and Diana Schroeder, aims to inspire and support undergraduate students pursuing careers in medicine.
The Mentoring in Medicine program provides a unique 10-week summer experience during which students shadow physicians across the Conemaugh Health System, gaining exposure to a wide range of medical specialties. The program not only offers valuable hands-on clinical experience but also prepares participants for the competitive medical school application process.
"Our mission is to provide local students with meaningful, hands-on exposure to the medical field while encouraging them to give back to their communities," said Dr. Alex Pozun, an Emergency Medicine physician at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Pozun, an alumnus of the program, now oversees it with his wife, Melissa Pozun, DPT.
The program combines academic guidance and clinical exposure, helping participants navigate the complexities of medical school admissions. Students receive assistance crafting compelling personal statements, refining interview skills, and forming lasting connections with physician mentors.
Since its inception, Mentoring in Medicine has supported 196 students, with an impressive 80% acceptance rate into medical school. Sixteen alumni of the program are now practicing medicine within the Conemaugh Health System and surrounding communities, highlighting the program's ongoing success.
Admission to this prestigious program is competitive, with only 10 positions available each year for college juniors, seniors, and first-year medical students. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a rising junior or senior in college majoring in pre-med or a first-year medical student.
- Have completed at least four of the following five required courses: calculus, biology, organic and/or inorganic chemistry, and physics.
- Reside in Cambria, Somerset, or Bedford counties.
Conemaugh Health System fully funds the program, offering participating students a stipend during the internship.
