Dr. George M. DeKornfeld Sworn into U.S. Navy as Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve

On Friday, March 28, George M. DeKornfeld, MD, a vascular surgeon at Conemaugh Health System, was officially sworn into the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. The ceremony took place in the Atrium of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, where Dr. DeKornfeld took the oath of office administered by Richard Goodrich, DO, an orthopedic surgeon with an extensive military background, surrounded by colleagues and fellow military personnel.
Dr. Goodrich has had a distinguished military career, including serving as the United States Navy Orthopedic Specialty Leader, Officer in Charge at the Naval Health Clinic New England, and Director of Medical Training at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune. His experience also includes key roles at Memorial Hospital in North Conway and at the NATO Role III Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
During the ceremony, Jennifer Silvis, DO, Trauma Surgeon, presented Dr. DeKornfeld with a U.S. Air Force Unit Coin—a challenge coin awarded by commanders to recognize significant achievements. Dr. Silvis, who has honorably served in the military since 2003, currently holds dual roles as a flight surgeon and general surgeon for the Critical Care Air Transport Team. She has completed tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and was awarded the John J. Templeton Jr. Military Call to Service Scholarship in 2018 while a resident at Conemaugh Memorial.
Dr. DeKornfeld was also honored with the Coin of Excellence from Rodney D. Reider, CEO of Conemaugh Health System. This prestigious coin is a symbol of Dr. DeKornfeld’s steadfast dedication to the health and well-being of the community, his contributions to Conemaugh Health System, and his commitment to improving public health.
This significant event marks another notable milestone in Dr. DeKornfeld’s career and underscores Conemaugh Health System’s continued support for the military community and its dedication to fostering excellence in both healthcare and service.
