Lymphedema Treatment
Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by a disruption or damage to the normal drainage pattern in the lymph nodes. Lymphedema causes swelling in the arms and legs, and can also cause swelling in the breast and chest. Removal of the axillary lymph nodes (under the patient’s arm) can increase a patient’s chance of developing lymphedema. No cure exists for lymphedema, but with proper management, swelling can be reduced and maintained.
Lymphedema treatment is typically covered by health insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid. A prescription is needed from the patient's primary care physician.
