Conemaugh Memorial’s Coumadin® anticoagulation clinic provides monitoring and assistance for patients taking Coumadin® or any other brand of anticoagulant or blood-thinning medication for the prevention or treatment of blood clots, atrial fibrillation, and after heart valve replacement.
Monitoring of patients taking anticoagulants is essential for patient care and safety. Side effects from these prescription medications can be potentially life-threatening if not managed properly. Participating in an anticoagulation clinic may decrease serious complications from blood-thinning medications.
During an appointment, the pharmacist or healthcare provider will take a drop of blood by finger stick to analyze International Normalized Ratio (INR) level. Results are available in seconds and any appropriate adjustments to medication will be prescribed. Additionally, complications, diet, and drug interactions related to taking Coumadin will be reviewed. A physician order is required.
